I am the joint managing partner of Bird & Bird ATMD and head of our Intellectual Property Group in Singapore. With more than 20 years' experience, I have honed a deep familiarity with international and cross-border issues involving IP commercialisation and brand management.

I apply my legal experience and my pragmatic understanding of our clients' industry to navigate the global IP landscape and help businesses realise their commercial value.

As an effective IP adviser, I arm myself with incisive legal knowledge across various jurisdictions, coupled with a keen commercial appreciation of a client's business drivers; I get intimately involved with legal and business teams both in-house and external to map out and execute strategic IP protection and risk management initiatives, thereby bringing tangible value to clients. Keeping a 'bird's eye view' as we mandate our clients' IP rights, we are able to navigate the IP ecosystem cost effectively and purposefully, from IP creation to revenue realisation. I often lead on global matters involving international clearances, IP due diligence and audits, and multi-jurisdictional negotiations in IP disputes.

I invest in understanding each client and their needs so that, as a firm, our service offering always remains absolutely relevant and responsive. This enables us to deliver professional excellence for which we are known as a firm.

Client matters aside, I am often called upon by IP industry bodies, official organisations, and the wider IP community to weigh in on issues impacting the IP landscape. In addition, I provide training and capability development to the IP industry locally, regionally and globally, speaking regularly at events and seminars organised by the International Trademark Association (INTA), WIPO, the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) and the Singapore IP Academy. In recognition of my expertise, I was appointed to serve a term as an IP Adjudicator with IPOS – the first practitioner to be appointed alongside academic luminaries and senior judicial officers.

These engagements enrich and infuse my practice with policy insight, first-hand engagement with industry stakeholders, and multi-faceted perspectives as trainer, educator, facilitator and adjudicator, which in turn allow me to better advise clients.

I am a partner in the Intellectual Property Group based in our London office. With experience in all aspects of international brand management, protection and enforcement, I focus on portfolio management, legal clearance searches, contentious registry proceedings and global branding strategies.

I have experience as a barrister, trade mark attorney, solicitor and in-house counsel, when I spent three years as a director of the world's largest branding consultancy, and have represented the owners of many of the most recognised and valuable international brands. This broad-based background enables me to have a well-rounded view when it comes to assessing issues and advising clients on commercial solutions.

Cost-effective portfolio management is a must for clients and we have developed a team structure and processes that enable us to provide a high quality, efficient and commercial offering for clients.

I oversee the management of numerous international trade mark portfolios working closely with clients to ensure their brand protection reflects and supports the commercial interest of the business. I also assist with the smooth launch of new brands and the expansion of existing brands into new territories by identifying any potential risks and devising appropriate strategies to eliminate or reduce such risks to a commercially manageable level.

Multi-jurisdictional disputes are becoming increasingly common and require careful management which we can provide through working closely with colleagues in our international offices and with carefully selected preferred firms in countries where we do not have an office.

Diane Hamer

head of business and legal affairs content & brand protection, BBC

Diane Hamer is a qualified solicitor who trained at Allens in Australia, focusing on media transactions and IP litigation. She later moved to London to work for Lovells, where she practised both contentious and non-contentious IP law. After an attachment at GlaxoSmithKline, Ms Hamer moved permanently in-house, working as the BBC’s trademark lawyer before moving to BBC Worldwide five years ago to head up its brand protection team in the business and legal affairs division of the company. Following the spin-off of production arm BBC Studios from the BBC public service in 2017, Worldwide merged with BBC Studios in April 2018. The new BBC Studios is a global media content and distribution company, embodying the best of bold British creativity and investing in quality content across premium genres, including factual, scripted and entertainment. Its profits contribute to significant financial returns that are reinvested into the BBC for the benefit of UK licence fee payers.

In her current role, Ms Hamer oversees the day-to-day management of the trademark portfolio exploited globally by BBC Studios, including brands such as Doctor Who, Top Gear, BBC Earth and various children's brands. She also manages the company's global anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy practice. She recently gave evidence to the House of Lords subcommittee considering amendments to the groundless-threats provisions of the Trademarks Act.

Before qualifying as a solicitor Ms Hamer worked in London as a researcher on a range of independent TV productions.
